Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union to Japan
Born in Germany in 1961. She obtained her Master/ Ph.D degree from University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Master in Public Administration from Harvard University. She received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Hiroshima University in 2019.
After working as a journalist, she began her diplomatic career at the German Federal Foreign Office in 1992. Her career includes postings at the German Permanent Mission to the UN, and as the German Ambassador to Georgia, Special Envoy for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, Director-General for the United Nations and Global Issues, Commissioner for Disarmament and Arms Control as well as EU Special Representative for Central Asia.
Since autumn 2018, she serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union to Japan.
