British Ambassador-designate to Japan
Julia Longbottom is the Ambassador-designate of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Japan as of March 2021. She is the first female ambassador to represent the United Kingdom in Tokyo. She previously served in Tokyo as Minister and Deputy Head of Mission (2012-16) and as Second Secretary – Political Affairs (1990-1993). Her most recent assignment prior to returning to Japan as ambassador was Director of the Coronavirus Task Force (February-July 2020) and Director for Consular Services (2016-2020) in what is now the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Her other Asia-focused roles have been Head of China/Far Eastern Department (2009-2012) and Head of Section for Nationality and Immigration in the Hong Kong Department at the time of the handover to China (1994-1997). Her other overseas postings have included Warsaw, The Hague and New York. She joined the Diplomatic Service in 1986.
