Commemorating the memorable year of gender equality and women’s empowerment

2021.03.29

Online zoom webinar

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host an online webinar on Monday, March 29th, 2021, to commemorate the need and importance of women’s empowerment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

女性のエンパワーメントをよりよい社会の原動力に スポーツ界における女性のエンパワーメント 女性・平和・安全保障って何?

PROGRAM

The year 2020 was one in which the importance of women’s empowerment was recognized anew. It marked the 25th anniversary for the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action that was adopted during the Fourth World Conference on Women, at which international policies were developed to promote achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment, and the 20th anniversary of the Security Council resolution 1325, which affirms the importance of women’s participation in the building and maintenance of peace and security. In addition to these milestones, the unprecedented threat of the spreading COVID-19 pandemic also made it a year in which the issues faced by socially- and economically-vulnerable persons were even more evident.
It has been pointed out that compared to men, women are disproportionately and greatly impacted in many ways, and there is concern that the gender gap that has always been an issue will widen further with the COVID-19 pandemic.
To renew our understanding of the status and issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment amid this situation, we have planned a discussion with panelists from various fields in Japan and abroad to discuss what type of policies should be implemented for the development of a better society in the post-COVID era from the three perspectives of a) women’s empowerment and society, b) women and sports, and c) the participation of women in peace and security. While all of these perspectives still face a great number of issues, there has been some progress. In this memorable year of gender equality and women’s empowerment, we wish to discuss the ideal society where that progress does not regress with the COVID-19 pandemic, and where life is easier for both men and women as no one is left behind.
We sincerely look forward to your participation.
